The perspective of parents is an important factor in whether children in Brunei participate in sport or not. To understand this issue further, qualitative research was undertaken in Brunei to explore parental perspectives with regards to their attitudes towards their children’s (aged between 7 to 12 years old) participation in sport. A sample of 6 parent participants was used and were selected based on pre-set criterion. The exploration was made through conducting semi-structured interviews. Based on the interviews, the potential factors affecting children’s sport participation were identified. Through a critical analysis of the factors affecting sport participation by children, it was revealed that the parental support is determined by three major limiting factors. The three principal factors are firstly, the children’s own interest and willingness to participate; secondly, the provision of opportunities by both the schools and the country; and thirdly, time commitment between work and religion. These limiting factors however are seen to influence parental involvement and attitudes towards the sports participation by their children. The research suggests that sport development programmes should be aware of the role of parents and that parental support is strengthened.
