The use of Ballistic exercises and the Post-activation Potentiation effect on the performance of an Isometric clean-pull

The aim of the current study is to investigate the post-activation potentiation effects of using Ballistic exercises on the performance of a three Isometric clean-pull from mid-thigh position. Nine male participants of varying sporting backgrounds and abilities took part in the study in which participants were randomly assigned one of three ballistic exercises. The three ballistic exercises in question consisted of a low-pull from the thigh, a jump squat and a counter-movement jump. Participants underwent an initial testing session to establish each participants’ peak force and the time taken to achieve peak force, participants were allocated three attempts in which the best attempt would be recorded as a baseline score. The main testing session Participants’ performed three sets of three repetitions of the selected ballistic exercise prior to the performance of the isometric clean-pull, as with the initial testing the best score obtained over the three attempts would be recorded, the scores obtained would be recorded as an average for each ballistic intervention sub-group. The results concluded that no significant differences (P<0.05) were observed across any of the intervention groups with regard to improvements in peak force and improvements in the time in which participants achieved peak force with the application of post-activation potentiation when compared with initial testing. Interestingly the counter-movement jump group overall displayed no improvements in peak force and increased time to achieve peak force when compared with baseline testing. It is believed that any improvements or regression in performance can potentially be attributed to participant’s levels of motivation to improve on scores obtained during baseline testing and participant’s familiarisation of the chosen task.
