The differences between winning and losing performances in rugby sevens

The identification of winning and losing performances, and understanding the differences between, is critical for coaches to understand the elements of success. Performance needs to be frequently assessed for teams seeking a winning performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between winning and losing performances in rugby sevens, analysing New Zealand and South Africa’s performances from the 2012/13 Sevens World Series; n=29. New Zealand and South Africa have been compared through specific performance indicators associated with various aspects of performance. A Mann-Whitney U test revealed statistical differences and the level of significance concerning each variable conducted throughout the study. Three variables were identifiably significant subsequent of the test, 'own line-breaks' (P = 0.000) regarding New Zealand and South Africa, 'own restart receptions' (P = 0.033) and 'ball retention' (P = 0.012). Other variables were unsuccessful in presenting any real significance that were potential indications between winning and losing performances. A key trend was the number of line-breaks that New Zealand executed, resulting in a try being scored. Another key trend was the number of carries that South Africa performed however the author found that winning potential was down to the ability to retain the ball (ball retention) through phases of play. On the whole, spatial awareness concerning line-breaks and the ability to score from each line-break appeared to formulate a winning potential. Furthermore, utilizing the ball from restart receptions and retaining the ball from breakdowns would be suggested as vital components for successful performance in rugby sevens
