dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this dissertation is to investigate and analyse the impact of cultural diversity on the effectiveness of units in the British Army. This is due to the importance of the subject of the rise of cultural diversity over the past two decades in the British Army. The inlfux of commonwealth and foreign soldiers into the British Army has affected the dynamics of fighting units. The increase in gender equality and the now supposedly "gender-neutral" operational environment is seeing women take more of an active role in the military than ever before. The modern day operational environment of the middle east has raised the importance of a religiously diverse force that can interact and coexist with local populaces. Sexual equality has become an increasingly relevant issue to the Army over the past two decade as various restrictions have been lifted on the exclusion of sexual minorities. The main of this dissertation is to explore and analyse the effect of these factors on unit effectiveness. The secondary purpose for this dissertation was to analyse whether intercultural awareness training would have any effect on unit effectiveness in the British Army. The rise in cultural diversity in the British Army means that leaders and personnel alike within the Army need to be able to interact and deal with conflict between different cultures in order for units to operate efficiently. The author carried out a number of interviews with serving members of the British Army alongside secondary research taken from a variety of sources that included the internet, journals, Regimental and institutional magazines and books. The interviews were carried out in person. The research concluded that, in general, cultural diversity is a positive factor in the effectiveness of Units in the British Army but that education is critical in maximising this positive impact.en_US
