An investigation into whether there are any motivational differences between full time and part time employees

study explores some of the most imperative motivational concepts with direct relation to employee performance. Hellreiger (2004) defines motivation as the forces within an individual or forces acting upon an individual that result in a certain behaviour being exhibited. The purpose of the study is to determine whether or not those forces acting upon employees within Diligenta differ if they are full time or part time. There is a focus on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and whether or not these two factors have any relevance to Diligenta in terms of the ways in which employees are motivated. This information is gathered through taking an inductive, interpretive and qualitative approach, where two semi-structured interviews are conducted with managers, in concurrence with four focus groups. Two of these were focused on studying part time employees and two studying full time employees. After analysing the transcripts it was found that for both part time and full time employees, intrinsic rewards are vital to the majority of employees however, intrinsic rewards are more effective when combined with extrinsic motivators. Furthermore, employees were in agreement that motivational factors are down to individual circumstances rather than being full time and part time. Upon reflection, the only noticeable differences in motivation are found on an individual basis and although intrinsic rewards appear most noticeable to employees, combining both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators can achieve the most effective outcomes with regards to employee performance and satisfaction
