Challenges, Faced by Bulgarian Hotel Management Companies

This project was undertaken in order to outline the challenges faced by Bulgarian hotel management companies. Several challenges were identified. Some of which universal, mutual for the hotel management companies in general, others specific for the Bulgarian hotel management companies operating in the conditions of the domestic market. The influence of these challenges over the business and operating practices of these companies was also analyzed and discussed. For the completion of this dissertation primary and secondary data was used. The secondary data was obtained through literature review. The primary data was gathered using qualitative research. Three face to face semi-structured interviews were conducted. The respondents’ positions were Chief executive officers of Bulgarian hotel management companies. The interviewees were very cooperative, and valuable information was collected. The data that was gathered during the interviews led to the expected results. The main outlined challenges that hinder the business of the Bulgarian hotel management companies were: hotel owners’ attitude, lack of information and distrust towards the hotel operators; the lack of experience – the oldest company in this field is 5 years old, lack of recognizable brand name; unfair competition between the operators; difficulties finding qualified employees. It became clear that some of the challenges identified through literature review overlap with the ones identified by the interviewees and others do not. It is a sign that although part of the big family of hotel operators, the Bulgarian hotel management companies have their specificities, due to the specific business environment they operate in. Despite the outlined challenge, the competitiveness of the Bulgarian hotel management companies is improving over time and the Bulgarian market is considered to have a huge potential.
