Digital Inheritance- An Investigation into What Happens to Online Personal Data When the Owner Passes Away

Abstract The following study investigates the process and issues concerning digital inheritance. More specifically this study investigates and analyses how online service providers currently address this issue. It also explores how the current legislations impacts on the process of digital inheritance. Firstly a thorough literature review was conducted, including current legislation. Primary research was collected in the form of a questionnaire. This highlighted some key issues, such as the general publics perception of digital inheritance and their awareness of the terms and conditions pertaining to online service providers. These key factors are discussed, analysed and addressed in this dissertation. In concluding limitations of this study are discussed and recommendations are made regarding future research based on this topic.
