A qualitative research methodology was used to explore the extent and purpose of imagery use by netball players (n:7). A Semi-structured interviews are conducted with each player, using an interview guide. An inductive analysis, within-case and cross-case analysis was implemented. Six categories emerged from the data: use of imagery, reasons for using imagery, effects of imagery, image content (ability/perspective), image outcome and imagery instruction. All participants reported using imagery, although the extent and purpose of the use varied. The athletes reported using imagery mainly in conjunction with competition, and very little during training. The main reasons for using imagery were to enhance confidence and concentration. Additional reasons included: to control or reduce anxiety and stress, to reinfbrce skills, to improve performance and to increase motivation. lndividual differences in imagery ability and perspective were found. Participants were found to have a limited knowledge of when and why imagery should be used. It would therefore be beneficial for psychologists to educate coaches towards implementing imagery into an athletes training programme due to the great enhancements that could result in performance.
