The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the extent to which sport acted as a catalyst towards the emancipation of Victorian women. The information used in this investigation was collected from various secondary sources, the content of which was analysed from both a historical and sociological perspective. The underlying social theory implemented as a means of interpretation in this study was that ofliberal feminism. The findings of this study concluded that while sport did contribute towards an increase in female opportunity and independence, this did not amount to a serious catalyst towards emancipation. The involvement of women in sport took place alongside an increase in female opportunity throughout society. This investigation concluded that this was motivated by the requirements of industrial capitalism rather than a change in society's attitudes towards women.
