The relationship between goal orientations and psychological skill usage

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between goal orientations and psychological skill usage in team sports players. The Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (T.E.O.S.Q) and the Test of Performance Strategies questionnaire (T. O.P. S) were administere d to 209 undergraduate males and females, aged between 18 to 27 years ranging from university to national level of performance, Preliminary analysis found no significant differences between goal orientations in males and females, between task orientation and ego orientation on psychological skills usage in practice and between ego orientation on psychological skills usage in competition. MANOVAs revealed significant differences in task orientation and psychological skills usage in competition. Upon examination, high task individuals were found to apply self-talk, automaticity, activation and relaxation techniques more in a competition setting than low task-orientated individuals. The findings and implications of these results are discussed along with future recommended research directions.
