To determine the optimal time to generate a sports massage

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to see what would be the optimal time to generate a sports massage under three timed conditions consisting of ten, twenty and thirty minutes. Methods: Four elite female middle distance runners participated in this study. A Sports Massage was applied to the subject's lower limbs on three separate occasions. Subjects completed a ten-minute step-test immediately post massage. An Infrared camera provided the thermographic images. Results: Two findings were observed. Firstly, thirty minutes of Sports Massage produced the optimal time for blood flow to remain before returning back to normal, therefore accepting the Research hypothesis and rejecting the Null hypothesis. Secondly, a further investigation was discovered during the study, that pre- exercise (after Sports Massage) produced higher mean temperature values than did the postexercise ten- minute step test. A dependent t-test was applied to the pre-exercise and post-exercise scores. The t-test revealed significant differences (P < 0.01) for all three timed Sports Massage conditions. Conclusion: As a result of these significant findings, there are many potential possibilities now open for further study, as it may be a promising avenue for the development of future research to examine.
