The principle aim of this study was to monitor variations in each of the four types of social support (emotional, esteem, informational, tangible) received by athletes after sustaining a sports injury. The amount of each type of support received was recorded over four time phases;7-10 days after sustaining the injury, 3 weeks after injury, 6 weeks after injury, and 1 week after return to full competition. Participants were required to complete the Social Support Injury Inventory for Athletes at each of the specified time phases, and asked to rate 16 statements according to the extent to which each had been an issue for them over the past week. The questionnaire was comprised of four sub-scales (emotional, esteem, informational, and tangible), with four items relating to each. The results were analysed using a repeated measures multiple analysis of variants (MANOVA). A significance value of <0.05 was adopted. The results showed that the within subjects main effect (time) was significant. Further univariate analyses identified that this finding could be attributed to emotional support. Tukey's followup test was used to reveal that there was a significant difference in emotional support between times I and 4 only. No other significant differences were found.
