A Comparative Physical Demands Analysis of Playing Positions in Amateur Netball Teams

Netball is a team game involving intermittent high intensity activity performed on a back drop of low intensity movement. The purpose of this time-motion analysis study is to understand the physical demands placed on each of the seven playing positions during competition. Four players for the 7 positional groups were analysed; Goal Shooter (GS), Goal Attack (GA), Wing Attack (WA), Centre (C), Wind Defence (WD), Goal Defence (GD) and Goal Keeper (GK). Totalling to 28 players being filmed individually for 15 minute performances in the Cardiff and District League. The game footage was replayed into Sports Code and coded into seven different movement activities under the subsections of low and high intensity movements. The frequency of movements, mean duration of movements and high intensity efforts were recorded. GK significantly performed less movement changes than everything other position (P<0.05) however significantly spends the longest duration performing high intensity movements with majority of time shuffling (P<0.05), therefore has significantly longer recoveries between bursts than other positions. C was found to jog significantly higher number of times than all other positions (P<0.05) revealing shorter recovery times. GS and GK significantly spent the longest durations stationery (P<0.05). Due to the high intensity movements predominating the demands of the game and obtaining important performance implications providing player specific training programmes to stress the aerobic and anaerobic systems appropriately was deemed essential.
