dc.description.abstractThis study falls into the sports coaching area, and attempts to evaluate some of the finer details within the coach-athlete relationship with the help of existing research. In order to explore the complexities and issues that exist within such relations, an autoethnography approach has been chosen. Autoethnographies allow emotions, thoughts, and feelings to be expressed from a personal perspective, which enables authors to try and connect their experiences into a cultural perspective (Jones, 2006). The experiences in this qualitative piece of research are real life encounters that took place in different stages of a transient coach-athlete relationship. Two stories have been conducted in order to analyse the specific relationship. The two stories, ‘The upcoming youngster with a fault’ and ‘The gradual, enlarging change’ take a closer focus into the caring agenda, and how I personally felt throughout the instances that are discussed. The contrast in the stories is that the first, focusses on positive incidents and how caring can be very effective, whereas, the second story takes a deeper look into the negative incidents of the relationship and the difficulties that can arise. Although there is a large contrast between the two stories, the use of theory and previous work is used to help make sense of the emotions felt. The two emerging theories used in this study are caring and the coach-athlete relationship. In an effort to further understand the issues and emotions that exist within the stories, they will both be discussed and connected together. The concluding thoughts about how coach-athlete relationships can change over time, and can become transient due to many complexities which will be identified. Furthermore, the autoethnography approach is proved to be effective in this type of research. This study could help coaches to further understand the complex nature of the coach-athlete relationship, and the caring complications that are involved. Also, the research found could help develop similar relationships by recognising such issues to overcome.en_US
