This project looked at performance appraisals, and the effect they have on employee motivation. Though used commonly within organisations, this study aimed to determine their perceived effectiveness within organisations and their influence on employee behaviour. Using a thematic analysis, secondary data was used and analysed to identify common themes within the literature. 62 themes were identified in the thematic overview, which were then further condensed into three overall themes. These themes were discussed further, and conclusions were the drawn into what insight they gave into the effect conducting performance appraisals have on employee motivation. Once this had been done, suggestions were then made concerning the appraisal process, and how it could be improved to have a positive impact on employee motivation. Limitations and opportunities for further research have also been discussed.en_US
