Comparison of inspiratory muscle training with two different training devices

Purpose: Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) is increasing in popularity with a confirmed efficiency and wide applicability. To date little research has been conducted to directly compare the effectiveness of available devices. This study examined and compared the effects of two available IMT devices. Methods: Twelve participants (8 male, 4 female; age 24.45 ± 4.94 years) were randomly assigned to either the RT2 or Powerbreathe® (PB) training group. Baseline measurements of height, weight, inspiratory muscle and pulmonary function were taken. Participants in the RT2 group trained 3 times a week using the RT2 device and followed the test of incremental respiratory endurance (TIRE) protocol, whilst the PB group trained twice daily using the PB device, following manufacturer guidelines. Post training measurements were taken following a 4-6 week training period. Results: Following training, measures of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), sustained maximal inspiratory pressure (SMIP) and time of contraction (Tcont) improved significantly overall (P = 0.01, P < 0.01 and P = 0.01 respectively). Measures increased to a greater extent in the RT2 group, however differences were not significant. Pulmonary function measures of forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and maximal voluntary ventilation in 12 seconds (MVV12) increased significantly following training (P = 0.03, P < 0.01 and P = 0.03 respectively). FVC was the only pulmonary measure to increase by a greater extent in the PB group, improving by 11.3 ± 11.8% compared with 6.0 ± 5.8% in the RT2 group. Conclusion: This study demonstrated both devices to significantly improve inspiratory muscle and pulmonary function, but failed to establish any significant difference between the two training groups. Data illustrated the RT2 to induce greater changes than the PB in the majority of measurements; providing direction for future research and device manufacture.
