The Effects of Acute Beetroot Juice Supplementation on Upper Body Strength and Endurance

An investigation into the ergogenic effects of acute beetroot juice (BR) supplementation on muscular strength and endurance performance. 10 male university students (mean ± SD age 20 ± 1 year; height 179.64 ± 4.91cm; mass 83.98 ± 11.04kg) with a minimum of 1 year resistance training completed 2 experimental trials T1 and T2, separated by a 3 day wash-out period, in a randomised, placebo controlled, crossover design. Participants completed an initial 1 repetition maximum (1RM) bench press test 2 days before T1. Following BR or placebo supplementation, participants performed the 1RM bench press test, followed by a maximum repetitions test of 60% of initial 1RM weight, separated by a 5 minute rest period. Following a 3 day wash-out period, groups were swapped and the tests repeated. Blood pressure (BP) was taken 5, 10 and 15 minutes post-exercise. Following a single 70ml dose of BR supplementation, T1 and T2 bench press 1RM (105.5 ± 23.2 and 130.6 ± 19.2 kg, respectively) and bench press total volume load (TLV) (1390.5 ± 152.5 and 1878 ± 388.1 N, respectively) increased (P<0.05) compared to placebo trials (130 ± 18.4 and 100 ± 20.6 kg; 1668.6 ± 457.1 and 1363.8 ± 147.1 N, respectively). Compared to placebo trials, BP 5, 10 and 15 minutes post-exercise decreased but not significantly (P>0.05) following BR supplementation. Conclusion: Acute BR supplementation increased strength and endurance in selected performance measures, specifically bench press.
