There has been previous research conducted into why children participate in sport along with the benefits that are gained through physical activity. However limited amounts of research have previously been conducted into the barriers faced by children who want to participate in sport in comprehensive school that serves deprived communities. The gap in the literature leading to where further research can be completed is what are the provisions and opportunities for participating in sport, PE and physical activity along with the potential barriers they face.
A mixed method approach has been used to allow for in-depth data collection. Both primary and secondary sources have been used to collect data along with interviews and questionnaires.
The research was valid and reliable which produced effective and efficient results for this discipline of study. From the study as the researcher I found that participation levels and engagement from pupils in deprived communities in sport is not as low as initially thought. Also there are plenty of opportunities being provided by the comprehensive school to further engage the current pupils and those less engaged.
