THE INFLUENCE OF SPORT TYPE ON THE SOURCES OF SPORT CONFIDENCE
MetadataShow full item record
The purposes of the study were to investigate the influence sport type (i.e. team or individual) had on the importance placed on the sources of sport confidence, and to establish the relationship between the level of robust self-confidence and the sources of sport confidence. A sample (N=176) of male (N=74) and female (N=102) athletes from either an individual (N=86) or team (N=90) competitive sport were used within the study. The Sources of Sport Confidence Questionnaire (SSCQ) (Vealey et al., 1998) and the Trait Robustness of Self Confidence Inventory (TROSCI) (Beattie et al., 2011) were used within the study to test the importance athletes placed on the sources of sport confidence, and their level of robust self confidence. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed individual athletes placed significantly more importance on mastery (p<.01) than team sport athletes. The findings suggest that interventions that have been effective at facilitating confidence in one particular group of athletes could reliably be applied to other groups of athletes, irrespective of sport type. The regression analysis of the TROSCI and the SSCQ revealed that social support (p<.05) was a significant negative predictor of an individuals level of robust self confidence. The findings emphasise the importance of understanding an athletes perceived social support needs, and creating environments that facilitates a greater reliance on more controllable sources of sport confidence.
