Development of Culture through Transformational Leadership within an English Premier League Football Academy

Due to the infancy of research the aim of the current study was to further explore the concept of culture within sport, using Schein’s (2004) organisational culture perspective. It attempted to identify the transformational behaviours of coaches to promote culture within a sporting environment. A total of 10 Football coaches from an un-named English Premier League Academy where interviewed, using an open-ended, semi-structured interview technique. All coaches highlighted the idea of culture and discussed how academy personnel had embraced it. Three principle transformational leadership strategies were identified; enlarging vision and understanding; empowerment; and the use of role modelling and guided discovery. Collectively, findings highlight several transformational leadership behaviours that could be applied to Schein’s (2004) three-level organisational perspective model. Due to the lack of support on the application of a business framework on a sport specific study, the current paper highlights the importance of developing a sport-specific organisational culture model.
