Perceived Usage and Effectiveness of Psychological Skills and Strategies in Elite Cricket
MetadataShow full item record
The current study examined cricketers’ use of both basic psychological skills and advanced psychological strategies when experiencing critical incidents that occurred both within a performance they identified as successful and unsuccessful. Participants comprised professional First Class County cricketers (n=6). Semi-structured interviews were used to retrospectively explore participants’ use of psychological skills and strategies and to determine the effectiveness in dealing with critical incidents. Data, analysed and displayed using causal networks, showed participants largely experienced an increase in performance when a basic skill or an advanced strategy was used in contrast to a decrease in performance when a basic skill or an advanced strategy was not used. Although the findings suggest that cricketers employ psychological skills and strategies, it is important that become aware of what skills and strategies they require and possess if they are to maximise their use in order to enhance performance.
