dc.description.abstractThis study utilised semi-structured interviews to explore track and field athletes (n = 9) perceptions of sport psychology (SP) to identify the factors that influenced their perceptions and use/non-use of SP services. In addition previous consultancy was explored to identify the factors that made this successful in an attempt to determine whether this consultancy influenced athletes‟ perceptions. Findings suggest that a number of significant others and individual difference influence athletes perceptions of SP and use/non-use of consultancy. Most influential was the athlete‟s coach, along with a lack of understanding about how to access services and the benefits of SP. It was suggested that improved education about SP services is needed for athletes, coaches and sport professionals. Future research should look to identify factors influencing negative perceptions and unsuccessful consultancy experience.en_US
