THE IMPORTANCE OF PERTURBATION ATTEMPTS ON MATCH OUTCOME &

The study investigated the importance perturbation frequency and success rate had on match outcome and whether these variables were affected by the evolution the score-line. Sample data was collected from 19 English Premier League soccer matches during the 2012-2013 season that involved a single individual team (Team 1). Independent samples t-tests and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the data for any statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). The results showed that Team 1 attempted to create significantly fewer perturbations (49 ± 13) than their opponents (70 ± 18) and maintained a higher success rate (34.3% ± 12.2% and 28.5% ± 8.8% respectively), however this proved to have no significant impact on match outcome. There was some evidence to suggest perturbation frequency and success rate was influenced by the evolution of match score-line, whereby perturbation rates (per possession) were higher when drawing (Team1 39.2% ± 8.0%; Opposition 55.6% ± 9.4%) and losing (Team 1 38.6% ± 16.6%; Opposition 52.1% ± 14.2%) than winning (Team 1 31.3% ± 9.1%; Opposition 41.5% ± 13.0%), although these results were not significant (p > 0.05). It was concluded that perturbation frequency and success rate was indicate of the style of play that Team 1 were considered to adopt, although this had no significant impact on match outcome. The results supported existing literature, in part (Bloomfield et al., 2004a; Lago-Peñas and Dellal, 2010) and reflected the tactical changes that occur with the evolution of match score-line, however further work is needed to better understand the importance of creating perturbations in soccer and the benefits this might have for researchers and practitioners.
