|dc.description.abstract||Background: Having left the Regular Armed Forces after serving 22 year‟s colour service and now employed as a Royal Army Physical Corp Instructor (RAPTCI) in the Territorial Army I decided to investigate and research the current Personal Fitness Assessment which is undertaken by all TA personnel between the ages of 18 and 64.
Objectives: The objectives of this study are
To analyse the current PFA for the TA
To determine patterns in failure rates
To determine factors attributing to failure rates
To create / devise an alternative assessment appropriate for TA personnel to reduce failure rates
Methods: The decision to develop a new test was based upon and supported by the following evidence Interviews (Appendices B, C and D) and Fitness Statistics (Appendix E). Analysis illustrated that a new test would address issues relating to fairness, gender, age, high failure rates, inconsistencies relating to bounty payments and the certificate of efficiency.
Results: Although the new test is not linked to any models a starting point in developing a new test was to undertake a SWOT analysis of the current PFA. This analysis identified areas for concern, age, gender and limitations relating to disciplinary action taken from a failure perspective. With the Army reducing in size
and the introduction of Future Reserves 2020, high failure rates and the lack of participation in the assessment also identified that a shift in strategy was required.
To ensure aims and objectives are met for those soldiers deploying on future operations.
The final pathway indentified a specific lack of adherence to the fundamental physical training principles of; strength conditioning, recovery, progressive training, an individual‟s perception and behaviour. This has a direct impact from a physical training perspective on the lack of direction and implementation from the respective managers with the responsibility of implementing this policy. This is supported by clear analytical data and trends during this period of research. The policy is in place however a will and reluctance to enforce it at the higher end of the management structure is evident through out this research. A change in strategy and mind set will allow the TA to maximise any potential benefits and minimise any risks for personnel deploying on future operations.||en_US
