dc.description.abstractRelative age effect (RAE) has been described as an inherent social construct that has been found to be present in elite sport talent identification processes (Musch and Grondin, 2001), particularly in sports that are highly dependent on physical attributes (Helson et al., 2000; Abbott and Collins, 2004). The purpose of this study was to conduct a case study investigation of a professional rugby union club in England and its Academy programme, whilst adopting a mixed methods approach. The quantitative analysis revealed that player selection was significantly skewed towards births in the first half of the academy age groups at the identification point but significantly reduced at the end point of the development process, indicating a RAE reversal whereby a greater percentage of players were converted into professional status who were born in the second half of the competition year. Qualitative analysis of interviews with four players revealed that the development journey was similar in relation to the global macro development stages they all passed through (Cote et al., 1999). Differences were observed in relation to physiological factors and psychological factors that underpinned progression with players born in the second half of the competition year experiencing a far more disruptive journey into professional status compared with players born in the first half of the year in the main owing to a primary physical advantage. Considerable research highlights the negative impact of being born in the second half of a competition year (Musch and Grondin, 2001). With little research advocating the positive outcome of being relatively younger within a chronologically organised sports group. The findings in this project suggest that RAE may not present such a disadvantage for relatively younger players that are selected into this academy programme.en_US
