The aim of this Dissertation was to investigate what impact the worldwide sporting event Ironman Wales has made on the seaside town, Tenby and the surrounding area of Pembrokeshire. Secondary research was undertaken to explore the literature already available related to three topics: the importance of major sporting events in British tourism; the impact of these events on the host destinations and the history of the Ironman competition. Primary research used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Two extensive interviews were undertaken to analyse the impact of Ironman Wales and to ascertain whether the competition has made a positive or negative impact on local businesses. Questionnaires were completed by 20 businesses in Tenby and the surrounding area to gain feedback regarding whether or not they believe that the event has boosted not only the area, but also local companies. It was concluded from the results that Ironman Wales has made a substantial financial impact - not just on Tenby, but also on the surrounding area. This study has concluded that Ironman Wales has also increased the level of participation in sport in Pembrokeshire. In summary, Ironman Wales has made a positive impact on Tenby and the surrounding area, not just raising awareness of the town as a tourist destination, but also focusing attention on young, active sport.
