Large scale sporting events such as the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, IRB Rugby World Cup, etc. are often the highlight of peoples’ sporting calendars. However, their ability to travel to these events is often impacted on by the transport infrastructure that exists around the sporting venue. The location of a good events venue will almost always be attributed to the quality of the roads, rail, air and sea networks. The aim of this study is to investigate Cardiff’s transport networks, and evaluate how they impact on its ability to stage large scale sporting events. The study entailed a comparative case study of Manchester as part of the data collection process. The study also used a semistructured interview, focus group, and questionnaire that were conducted with a cross-section of the Cardiff public. Additional primary research data was obtained from an employee of a significant large scale venue in Cardiff and a student based focus group. The recurring theme that emerged from the results is that the key stakeholders regard Cardiff as ‘lagging-behind’ other cities with regards to the transport network and infrastructure that supports the city. The stakeholders were very supportive of Cardiff and the sporting events that it stages, but they regard the transport networks as dated. The research indicates that Cardiff’s transport networks need to be improved to effectively service the high quality venues located in the city. The research concludes by identifying that positive investment and ‘joinedup’ strategic thinking are required to contribute to the improvements that are needed. By doing this the city's transport infrastructure can be improved to ensure that Cardiff remains an attractive venue for major large scale sporting events.
