Online learning technologies have changed the way individuals can achieve and experience a higher education. Universities are more commonly adopting online learning technologies to replace traditional methods with more convenient ways of learning. This study investigates and critically assesses online learning systems in comparison with traditional higher education teaching methods and evaluates the likelihood of Cardiff Metropolitan University becoming an online-only university. A review of previous research gives insight into this field of study by exploring both the benefits and limitations of online learning methods and also providing background into what factors affect the success rate of online learning. Existing literature indicates that the main barrier in online learning is societies perception of it and attitudes towards it. This is investigated to see if it deems true for Cardiff Metropolitan University students. A mixed methods approach was taken to explore the views and opinions of students at Cardiff Metropolitan University using; questionnaires, completed by 200 students from Cardiff Metropolitan University, structured interviews, of two individuals with sufficient experience in online learning and focus groups, accrued from questionnaire participants. Conclusions drawn from this study determine that the step to converting to an online-only university is a long way away, if at all for Cardiff Metropolitan. Yet the future of Cardiff Metropolitan remains questionable due to uncontrollable social, economical and technological factors.
