This project will go into detail on how students at Cardiff Metropolitan University (CMU) use social media and whether it has a positive or negative effect. This project aims to investigate whether social networking does impact students’ academic performance and whether it restricts their academic achievements. There is currently a great deal of existing literature on social media within higher education including statistics of the growth of social media over the previous years. This project will go into detail of the benefits and limitations of using social media including all medical considerations that factor in.
This project was accomplished using the realism and deductive approach as there was a time constraint set as well as the fact the researcher was unaware of what the results from the primary research would behold. The primary research was conducted in the form of a questionnaire which identified different views that students had towards social media, however the majority of participants found that social media was distracting therefore had a negative impact on their academic studies. The primary and secondary research met the purpose of the project defining the effects social media has at CMU.
