In my role as Key Stage 4 co-ordinator, I have been concerned about the pupils who leave the education system with no qualifications because of a poor perception of themselves as learners. My research focussed on a small group of Year 11 pupils who were in danger of falling into this category. I explored with this cohort a range of strategies which I felt may prove to be effective. This was influenced by earlier research into accelerated learning and individual learning styles. I felt that addressing individual styles may re-engage this group. The group proved interesting, unique and defied all attempts to be influenced by my research project. Their approach to my input and their response made me rethink my initial hypothesis. However in the process I discovered something that worked for this group; it was unforeseen and totally unexpected and has implications for the organisation of the school for disaffected learners.
