The impact of a health related exercise unit on pupils' engagement, motivation and future intentions towards physical activty

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of young women towards Physical Education in order to form a basis for the development of a 6-week Health Related Exercise unit of work delivered to year 10 pupils in one rural school in south Wales (n=54). Questionnaires were used to collect the relevant data (n=102) and two focus groups conducted in conjunction to evaluate the impact of the Health Related Unit (n=10). The questionnaire results generally indicated that those who had negative Physical Education experiences had low self perception of ability particularly in games and traditional activities which were also identified as their most disliked activities; had the lowest out of school Physical Activity levels and had negative intentions towards future exercise despite acknowledging the value of a physically active lifestyle. The Health Related Exercise unit turned many of these negative Physical Education experiences into positives by; increasing positive intentions towards future physical activity habits; developing new interests in lifetime activities; increasing pupils awareness of Physical Activity recommendation guidelines and knowledge and understanding of the constituents of health and fitness raising the educational value of Physical Education for pupils. This study presents many implications for the way Physical Education teachers should approach Physical Education in the future. On the basis of the findings in this study it was concluded that the Physical Education National Curriculum is in need of revision, suggesting the development of a curriculum where the activity areas are permeated through a Health Related thematically structured curriculum.
