This aim of this research was to produce a disability sport strategy for the Vale of Glamorgan Council that forms an integral part of the overarching Sport & Physical Activity strategy for the local authority. To underpin this strategy the research sought to develop the theoretical understanding of the issues involved in the development of a disability sport strategy through the examination of relevant strategic management literature and through the understanding of the implications of intemal and external policy on the content of the strategy. To establish local needs a consultation process was undertaken with people with disabilities in the community and with organisations who have a direct or indirect interest in disability sport opportunities. Both quantitative methods in the form of surveys and qualitative methods in the form of a workshop were utilised to accommodate the diversity of needs of the target groups. Sports strategies produced by other organisations such as the Australian Sports Commission and Sport England were researched as part of the development process to highlight areas of good practice that are appropriate to the Vale of Glamorgan. The strategy that was produced as a result of this research identifies four key themes for development within disability sport in the Vale of Glamorgan. The themes of partnership development, club development, development of competitive opportunities and marketing encompass the key areas for development that were highlighted by those involved in the consultation process. These themes will direct the work of the Vale of Glamorgan Sports Development Unit over the following three years.
