The purpose of this research was to critically examine the key barriers affecting badminton participation in young people aged between nine and sixteen years. To achieve this, literature on the barriers affecting sports participation was reviewed, specifically examining the extent to which these barriers have been tackled within badminton, the impact this has had on young people's participation, and any potential solutions/ suggestions on ways to facilitate young peoples participation in badminton. Snowball sampling was the technique used to obtain a sample group from Dorset County, which consisted of seven badminton clubs, five PE teachers, and the Badminton Development Officer. The schools and badminton clubs selected ensured a good geographical spread of the entire Dorset area. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on all thirteen participants, and the data was transcribed and coded into five themes which categorise the key barriers affecting participation in young people. Several participants indicated that the logistical requirements of badminton were often difficult to meet. Similarly, the profile and appeal of badminton requires greater attention, with specific improvements needed in the amount and type of media coverage. Another common finding was the lack of constructive and forward-thinking communication between parents, the Badminton Development Officer, PE teachers and sports clubs. Key recommendations included bringing high profile players to the children through school/ club visits, increasing the number of Badminton England affiliated schools, increasing the use of school facilities, and ensuring improved communication between Badminton England authorities and PE teachers to disseminate appropriate details of badminton clubs.en_US
