Aim: Based on the training principle of specificity combined with the employment of biomechanical techniques, the purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of fatigue on performance related kinematics of the line-out throw with the overall purpose of identifying game-specific training programmes. Methods: Six professional rugby hookers (mean age 22±2.85 years) voluntarily participated in the experiment. Subjects were videotaped using Sony DVCAM digital cameras (DSR PD100AP) while performing a line-out throw. Each subject was fitted with a Polar S810i heart rate monitor and kinematic measurements were made in no fatigue and fatigue conditions. All subjects completed 5 throws in the no fatigue conditions from 5m and then 5 throws from 10m. Subjects were incrementally fatigued on a Concept tr (MP3) rowing machine and then repeated the throws from 5m and 10m. Accuracy of throw was recorded and points allocated for each successful throw in both conditions. 3-D kinematic data was calculated from co-ordinates on body segments analysed in a computer software programmme (Silicon Coach). Mean angular displacement measurements at the elbow, shoulder, hip and knee were recorded. All subjects completed the testing protocol. Results: Analysis of the fatigue and no fatigue throwing conditions revealed no significant difference (p>0.05) in mean angular displacement at the elbow, shoulder, hip and knee. No significant differences were seen in throwing accuracy over 5m. Significant differences (P=0.025) were demonstrated in throwing accuracy over 10m. Conclusions: Angular displacement does not alter significantly with fatigue suggesting that movement patterns remain consistent in both of the throwing conditions. The findings support anecdotal evidence that fatigue affects throwing accuracy.en_US
