This dissertation explores the literary and cultural significance of Seren’s 2013 publication of a series of novellas adapted from an infamous collection of Medieval Welsh folk tales called the Mabinogion. The Seren series, entitled New Stories from the Mabinogion, takes these ancient tales and retells them for the twenty-first century reader. Conducting a thematic study of the literature, analysis will examine the ways in which three main motifs are addressed and developed throughout the series. Those motifs will include the varying depictions of landscape in chapter one; the representation of the Welsh Arthurian Legend in chapter two; and finally the portrayal and potential empowerment of female characters within the series in chapter three.
