Members of the printmaking research group within WIRAD’s Fine Art and Ceramics theme were invited to participate in the International Digital Art Conference, SIGGRAPH, by Sue Gollifer, a former curator for SIGGRAPH. The selected work suited the theme of the conference – global eyes – since it was drawn from a 'portfolio collaboration' already underway between nine artists from India and nine from Britain, five of whom were printmakers in PROOF. The Global Eyes panel was chaired by Vibeke Sorensen, Professor of Media Studies at the University of Buffalo. The portfolio project sought to use digital print as an on-line collaborative medium to communicate between artists of two nations. The eighteen artists were asked to create collages around the theme of identity using traditional materials. The originals were then scanned at CSAD. Transferring the images into digital form meant a new degree of manipulation became possible and, through a series of email exchanges, conversations and decisions regarding the final compositions took place between the eighteen artists. Each work (30 cm x 30 cm) was actual-size printed on special coated fine-art paper using archival inks. The digital prints in the portfolio are editioned in small numbers (no more than 20 of each) plus artists' proofs. What the project revealed was the degree of cross-cultural interaction and exchange that digital print media make possible. In the case of my print, the digital media encouraged the layering of different kinds of scanned image, for example, photographs, drawing, painting and embroidery. The exchange of emails between some of the artists and the organisers in India heightened my awareness of the different cultural readings that might be given to the images I was using.
