Sue Hunt: Recent Work
MetadataShow full item record
My research as a painter and printmaker explores the relation between representation and abstraction, taking still lifes and the landscape as its points of departure. Whereas previous work had used still-life objects as the basis for semi-abstract explorations of colour, this body of work sought to give the paint more independence (for example, through the use of 'wet on wet') while maintaining some link with the original objects. The new understanding which arose from this independence was a sense of space or landscape: not the actual space of the objects, but a more 'intimate' space, as if we were seeing the state of embodiment shared by painter and audience through brushstrokes and blendings of colour and tone. Rather than distancing ourselves from objects, as abstraction can sometimes do, my use of paint in an independent, material manner actually achieved a sense of space which embraced the objects. The exhibition was arranged at the invitation of Carol Ann Davies, director of Cardiff Bay Arts Trust (CBAT), following my participation in Shared Language, a three-person exhibition organized by the Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, and Newport Museum and Art Gallery in 1997. There was an accompanying catalogue, ISBN 09527802-7-5, published by CBAT, with an article by Norbert Lynton, whose participation was funded by the Arts Council of Wales and the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
