This project continued my interest in the capacity for abstract painting to express or respond to certain themes or situations. My method developed the observation made in Mavericks that novelty could emerge from uniformity in the face of changing subject matter. In this project, miniature abstract painting practice was used to measure time. I made one watercolour miniature (9 cm x 9 cm) per month during 2004 for an artist’s book, following a commission from the October Foundation, Eindhoven. The research value of the work lay in the correspondence created between time and abstract painting. Both displayed novelty from uniformity: individual days against the passage of time, and individual colours and arrangements from a vocabulary of orientations, spatial relationships and colours. For example, seasonal variations were made manifest through qualities of light and colour, and a sense of duration was made apparent through changes in the geometric formations from one piece to the next. The book was launched at the exhibition October Foundation – Far From The Sea at Künstlerhaus Palais Thurn und Taxis, Bregenz, Austria in February 2005. The exhibition included my original watercolours, and work by other October artists (such as Richard Long, Alan Charlton, Roger Ackling) who had time and nature as their themes. The book had its UK launch at Flowers East in November 2005. The book, original watercolours, and archival material from the year-long project were shown again at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 2006 as part of an exhibition displaying the history and production of artists’ editions commissioned by the October Foundation.en
