How effective is mentoring in helping a South Wales school close the gap and improve attainment for pupils eligible for free school meals?

The purpose of this case study is to assess the impact that a new initiative within school X can have in closing the gap in terms of academic performance. The initiative is to introduce 3 learning mentors to support free school meals pupils and to mentor them regularly in the hope school X can close the gap on those pupils not eligible for free school meals. Performance of the free school pupils’ in school X is under regular scrutiny and the academic performance is improving but the gap in achievement between free school meals and non-free school meals pupils’ is not closing and school X are concerned about this. Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected and examined. This will come in the form of analysis of the progress of the free school meals pupils academically from the three-year groups comparing their progress to their previous years achievements. Have the pupils that have received regular mentoring sessions also made any improvements in terms of attendance, reduced exclusions or improved their behaviour in lessons? This will form the quantitative data of the study. Qualitative questionnaires will also be used to ascertain how the pupils perceive the mentors have impacted on them. Staff and pupil interviews will also be conducted to gain a deeper understanding of how they feel these new members of staff supported the free school meal achievement within school X.
