dc.description.abstractThe majority of the population have provided public sector companies with their own personal and financial data and information. It is essential for these companies to protect this data in a safe and secure manner. The research into this issue allowed insight into what measures and guidelines there are for companies to follow to secure customer and consumer data as well as what happens when companies suffer a data loss – such as TalkTalk in 2015, HMRC in 2007 and Sony in 2011. Research into existing British legislation – including the Data Protection Act 1998 – and into security measures and data protection within modern day cloud computing systems gave understanding about the guidelines that companies need to follow as well as the responsibilities public sector businesses have when holding their customers data. Real world investigations were also undertaken through the use of qualitative and quantitative data – such as questionnaires and interviews – in order to find out employees knowledge of customer data laws and to determine how companies train employees regarding relevant information. The investigation also found out what the everyday consumer knew about what was happening to their data and also regarding their rights to their own data. This investigation led to the discovery that the large majority of consumers were not aware of how their data was treated, but they do find the safety and security of their data to be of high importance. The investigation also found that despite this, consumers still pass on their data to businesses without any thought. There are many measures and guidelines for companies to follow to use to protect customer data, these guidelines can also be followed along with British legislation. Public sector companies are on the whole, following Data Protection laws in the correct manner and ensuring that customer data is being held in the proper legal manner ensuring safety and security.en_US
