This study explores to identify the importance of personal motivation and whether or not it has an effect on role longevity of staff nurses at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan (YAB), Ebbw Vale. The main aim of the study is to recognise what motivational factors were most significant and effective when it comes to retention of staff in the hospital. In order to achieve this, the researcher set out clear objectives in order to meet the aims of the study. The literature on the theories surrounding the area of research were critically reviewed and evaluated in order to establish the correlation between previous study to the current study. The research methodology employed by this dissertation was that of a qualitative data approach, in the form of semi-structured interviews with nursing staff in YAB. A total of twelve participants were selected for this study using an opportunity sampling method. The results from the study show that nursing staff believe that motivation factors are an integral mechanism of retaining employees. This has been fulfilled through analysis and discussion of results from the interviews. Responses from participants were discussed and the author made comparisons and similarities between the answers from all twelve participants and linked the responses of participants to the literature review. Quotations from participants were also used to support the findings. In summary, the findings of this study reveals that job satisfaction, the working environment and getting praise and recognition for their efforts has a major influence on employee retention.en_US
