Pernicious Anaemia (PA) is a chronic illness that causes B12 deficiency. Symptoms include fatigue and reduced concentration. As with other chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, PA may be subject to stigma and delegitimation. Stigma comes in two forms: enacted and experienced. Labelling theory can cause negative connotations to be attached to a sufferer of chronic illness. Delegitimation is having one’s definitions of a condition dismissed. This often comes from how healthcare professionals view the symptoms and cause. Health literacy can reduce this.
