AN INVESTIGATION INTO WHETHER INFORMAL CARERS ACCESS SUPPORT SERVICES.

Informal carers provide a valuable contribution in society, providing unpaid care to loved ones to help them lead as independent and fulfilling lives as possible (Secretaries of State for Health, Social Security, Wales and Scotland, 1989). Whilst many informal carers take on this responsibility willingly the effects the caring role can have on the informal carers can be challenging (Carers UK, 2014). In response to this there are many support services available for informal carers to access to facilitate them. This study is an investigation into whether informal carers access these support services and the reasons behind their choices. Support services are provided by the government to ensure that carers’ health and well-being is focused upon and not compromised as a result of their caring role. Despite the importance of support services for informal carers that is embedded into legislation Greenwood et al (2015) and Moriarty et al (2015) found that informal carers are failing to access the services. Greenwood et al (2015) also noted that found that understanding the reasons for low uptake of support services is important as they can help improve a carer’s quality of life. Given this information it seems beneficial for both informal carers and for the government to conduct this investigation and have more research into informal carers are still failing to access services and to understand the reasons behind their choices. This research is relatively small-scale with 25 participants and was conducted using primary research in the form of questionnaires. The findings of this research did support Greenwood et al (2015) and Moriarty et al’s (2015) study with 76% of participants in the study failing to access support services. Reasons for not accessing support services was sought which highlighted lack of awareness of the services was an issue among others.
