This dissertation research study investigates what the views, knowledge and opinions are on electronic cigarettes of Cardiff Metropolitan students who are on Health Sciences courses. The research began with a literature review available in the public domain. Qualitative and quantitative studies were reviewed to provide a holistic view. Knowledge of electronic cigarettes in general was reviewed and reasons why people smoked and/or vaped also. Research is still ongoing to investigate the health effects which could be presented within vaping. Research has shown that smoking is still the world’s main cause of preventable death. It is argued through research that vaping is said to be safer than smoking as it does not contain tobacco, however the nicotine addiction will remain. Conversely, at present there is little information on the effects of vaping on the human body and how safe it is for human consumption. A semi-structured interview was then carried out with a sample of students who were either current smokers or vapers or ex-smoker or ex-vapers to gain the data. The findings of this study were that many people smoke and vape together, or just vape mainly for the social reasons. Participants indicated that they did not have much knowledge on the health implications of vaping. The recommendations of this study include having greater public health information available on vaping to enable people to make suitably informed choices.
