The effect of two commercial denture cleansers, saliva and water on the mechanical properties of poly-methyl methacrylate acrylic resin.

Purpose: This study evaluated whether water, saliva and two different commercial denture cleansers had an impact of the transverse strength of heat cured acrylic resin, poly methyl-methacrylate. Method and Materials: A total of 35 acrylic specimens were fabricated and split into five categories each consisting of seven samples. The five groups included a control group, water, saliva, denture cleansers Poligrip and Seradent. The control group were kept in an air tight sealed bag. The variable groups were immersed for soaking cycle’s representative of a 30 day use for each specific condition. A three point bed test was used to investigate the transverse strength using the Lloyds universal testing machine to determine the load at which the samples fractured, measured in newtons (N). The deflection was measured in millimetres (mm) and the transverse strength in MPa, the results were then statistically analysed using a student t-test. Results: The t-test revealed no significant differences between any of the variable conditions on the transverse strength (P>0.05). Water displayed an increase in regards to the transverse strength but when statistically analysed demonstrated no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion: After a simulated 30 day period of soaking cycles there was no correlation between the transverse strength of heat cured acrylic when immersed in denture cleansers, saliva or water. Future investigation may focus on longer soaking periods, using a method of production for the acrylic samples which eliminates human error and using different chemically balanced saliva to attain a more realistic sample.
