An Investigation into the factors which influence students’ choice in research project topics.

Objectives: Interested in discovering the factors that influence students’ choice of undergraduate research project, the author of this study reviews the various elements that go into decision-making vis-à-vis research topic choice. It is important to be well informed about students’ experiences and expectations of their projects in order to improve the topic selection process in the future. Materials and Methods: A paper-based questionnaire was devised and distributed to all final-year dental technology students at Cardiff Metropolitan University (n=18). Results: Sixteen completed questionnaires were received, giving an overall response rate of 88.9%. The collected data highlighted a variety of factors; with interest in the subject area being the most important factor. Other factors included the chance to extend knowledge in a familiar area, the opportunity to learn more about an unfamiliar area or technique and the chance to use particular skills. Conclusion: The study indicates that students use a variety of factors in making their final selection of research project with the four listed above as the criteria making the greatest impact on choice.
