The Effect of a Monomer on the Bond Strength between Artificial Teeth and an Acrylic Denture Base

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer has an impact on strengthening the bond between acrylic teeth and an acrylic base resin. Methods and Materials: The samples were made from ORACRYL acrylic and processed with Cosmopolitan acrylic teeth to produce 38 specimens, divided into two groups. One of these groups received monomer surface treatment and the other did not. The bond strength between the teeth and the acrylic base was then tested using an universal testing machine. Results: The outcomes were analysed using an unpaired t-test. The results showed that the samples with the monomer coating resisted a higher load than the control group samples. Conclusion: Surface treatment of the tooth ridge lap has a significant effect on bond strength between acrylic teeth and an acrylic base. The wider contact area between the tooth and the acrylic base resin increases the strength of the bond via a greater interpenetrating polymerisation network (IPN).
