Perched precariously between the boundaries of fine art, craft and design, the status of ceramic practice remains subject to much debate. A collaboration between Fife Contemporary Art and Craft and the Oriel Davies Gallery in Wales, Placement – Ceramic Connections: Wales and Scotland recognises the multidisciplinary applications of clay. The exhibition’s first part in St Andrews Museum brings together makers from across the UK to demonstrate the narrative potential embedded in the creation and display of ceramic objects. Regardless of the six makers’ geographic and creative backgrounds, their experiential processes of handling clay are emotionally responsive to personal histories and ideologies. By placing significance on the works’ reception by the viewer, the exhibition positions ceramics as mediators of interpretation. In doing so, it invites us to examine our own experiences and assumptions about both the nature of contemporary ceramics and the issues raised by the content of the work.en_US
