A Consumer Survey of how Ready Meals contribute to UK diets

Background – The ready meal market has shown a significant increase over the years, as a result of an increasing trend towards convenience food. The project will aim to identify how participants consume ready meals, while exploring their ideas and knowledge of ready meal salt content. Method - A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect relevant data. A total of 60 participants were recruited, through opportunistic sampling. Results - A total of 48 research participants consume ready meals. On average, ready meals are eaten between 2-4 times a week. Results show that the respondents overall understanding and knowledge of salt is poor. Of the 60 participants, only 16 knew the recommended daily salt allowance, stating the correct answer of 6 grams. Conclusion - Salt is a low priority when determining ready meal food choice. Government authorities and food manufacturers need to increase consumer awareness and knowledge of salt. Further research is required with regards to food labelling, if it is to become a public health intervention.
